When you have an unfinished basement or you want to remodel your basement, there are many ideas or concepts you will want to consider. A basement requires a lot of thought and proper execution not only to fully enjoy your basement but to ensure it is a safe environment. When you are thinking of remodeling or finishing your basement, MB Construction would like to share a few tips to help you plan out your basement remodeling.
Purpose of Your Basement
The entire basement remodel and design will be based on the basement’s purpose. What will your basement be used for? Every homeowner will have a different need or idea for their basement. Will your basement be an extra bedroom, an office, or a recreational area? Once you are able to determine your basement’s purpose you will know how to design and remodel the basement.
What Type of Flooring is Best for Basements?
One of the first major considerations when it comes to finishing or remodeling a basement is the flooring. Most homeowners never plan for the worst … but the worst can happen in a basement is flooding. If a flood occurs in your home, most of the water will end up in your basement. For this reason you will want to plan your flooring out carefully. You should consider avoiding carpets and wood floors as they will not hold up against moisture in any flooding scenario. In a basement some of the better choices would be tile or a luxury vinyl plank flooring. However if it floods, even these floor types will need some maintenance and possible replacements. One of the best choices for a basement flooring is not flooring. In a basement it is highly recommended to go with an epoxy floor. Epoxy floors use an epoxy resin that comes in many colors and designs. You can have beautiful floors that are completely waterproof and will protect the concrete from moisture. You will never go wrong with an epoxy basement floor.
What Absorbs Moisture in Basement?
In a basement, moisture control can be a major problem. Moisture can affect everything. To protect the basement walls and ceiling, consider using a water lock paint. You will want the paint to fill in the cracks in the walls or ceiling to help seal out the moisture. Not only will a water lock paint help protect your basement from moisture you can bring in bright colors to a dark and damp ceiling. Another aspect to controlling moisture in a basement is installing a dehumidifier. To prevent too high of moisture in the basement, consider installing a dehumidifier that can monitor and control the humidity in the basement.
How Bright Should Basement Lights Be?
When designing your basement make sure to develop a good lighting plan. If possible use natural light to help make the basement feel more open. You can bring in natural light with basement windows or even sun tunnels. Make sure you provide enough artificial lighting in the basement as well. Pocket light is a great lighting option as they do not take up any ceiling space and can be installed easily. To ensure a basement doesn’t feel like a basement, make sure to have enough lighting.
